How to Become a Crane Mechanic

by Nancy Bruton | Apr 19, 2017

If you’re looking for a hands-on occupation that gives you the opportunity to put your problem-solving and mechanical skills to work, a career as a crane mechanic or technician may be a great option for you. Here’s a general overview of the career and the skills, training and education you would need to be eligible for hire as a crane mechanic.

 Education Requirements

CoastCrane_OperatorThe only education you need to be eligible for a career as a crane technician or mechanic is a high school diploma. The fact that postsecondary education is not required is a major draw for many people. That said, it’s important to note that completing postsecondary degree programs – or at the very least taking courses – in mechanics, heavy machinery or other related subject areas can be highly beneficial and give aspiring crane mechanics the competitive edge they need to set themselves apart from other applicants.

 Other Requirements

An unwavering commitment to safety and a high level of awareness is mandatory for anyone looking to enter this field. Many employers also require extensive on-the-job training before technicians are allowed to begin working on/with heavy machinery and crane equipment.

 Job Duties

While crane mechanics can find work in a wide range of industries, the majority work for construction firms, government organizations or equipment distribution businesses, such as Coast Crane Company. Though job duties vary depending on the industry in which you’re employed, crane mechanics/technicians are typically responsible for:

  • Repairing and maintaining crane equipment
  • Replacing defective parts
  • Cleaning equipment
  • Writing technical reports that may or may not involve estimating the cost of repairs and replacement parts
  • Using computerized testing tools, micrometers, calibration equipment, etc. to diagnose problems and perform repairs/service accordingly
  • And many other relevant, hands-on duties

 Average Salary

According to the May 2015 U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) report, crane technicians earned an average salary of $50,080 annually or $24.08 hourly; however, these rates can vary slightly depending on the industry and location in which the technician is employed. For example, crane technicians within the natural gas industry earned the highest wages, with an average annual salary of $68,250.

 Job Outlook

The BLS also reports the job outlook for crane mechanics and technicians is expected to increase by 5% from 2014-2024, especially for those who possess formal training or education in crane technology.
